EDITOR'S VOICE.... OVER IP
A month after returning from global tradeshows and an overseas holiday, I was greeted by a $800 mobile phone bill. Although I expected my roaming charges would be high while overseas, I never thought it would cost me more than the 5.0 mega pixel digital camera that I was eyeing for Christmas.

With the cost of international roaming so high, I just cannot wait for Voice Over IP (VOIP) to bring us a new and cheaper way of voice communication. I am already hearing about the pioneering mobile CPE phones with wireless Internet connectivity. With these gadgets, it would be possible to use cheaper VOIP networks in hotspot locations. Service plans can cost as little as $20~ $30 a month, offering unlimited local and long-distance calls in the U.S. and Canada and costing a few cents more to call overseas. I hear you can also do Internet-based instant voice messaging along with instant messaging.

However, it may still take some time to iron out unresolved VOIP issues, like inconsistent sound quality, reliability due to congested networks, limited hotspots and Malware (the term for software that does bad things, like spam, worms, viruses, spyware, and phishes). Until these issues are settle, I guess I will be stuck with high roaming charges and taking “still” pictures of my bank (or should I say “blank”) balance.

Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

ENGINEERING CORNER

Testing the extremes on airHaul Nexus - Vibration Tests

Will the wireless radio withstand a drop from a tower during a storm? Will it function normally if it was placed outside in the rain? Will the performance drop if it was mounted near a vibrating source?

Do these questions bother you when you are deploying a wireless radio? At smartBridges, we understand the pains of deploying wireless equipment that have to be carrier class. We understand that the cost of truck rolls can significantly eat into your profits. This is why we spend a significant amount of effort to ensure the products we produce are carrier-grade equipment.

The airHaul Nexus, for example, undergoes various forms of tests to strengthen its robustness. One such test is called the vibration test. This test helps to ensure flawless quality, high reliability and protection of the airHaul Nexus against any physical stress sustained while in operation, transportation or when mounted on high-rise towers. It subjects the airHaul Nexus mainboard and housing to a high amount of vibration to replicate the toughest of operating conditions in both natural and man-made environments.

WIRELESS EDUCATION CORNER

Security in a wireless network to keep out intruders

Although WLANs provide enormous flexibility, they also can be a potential open door into the network. Unauthorized access to networks by way of a wireless access point can be all too easy if you don't employ measures to protect your data.

In fact, security fears have caused some network managers to avoid installing WLANs, regardless of the numerous benefits that they provide. However, the landscape of wireless security has now changed, giving IT managers the confidence to deploy WLANs.
