From Strength to Strength - SME 500 Ranking

The quest to unwire the world is paying off for smartBridges in a big way. Just into its sixth year since its founding, smartBridges is now ranked as one of Singapore's top SMEs (Small and Medium sized Enterprises), the company's third major achievement in the last two years.

The Singapore SME 500 ranking by Ernst & Young is not just the only quantitative performance benchmark here but also the most authoritative. The ranking is supported by the Singapore Productivity and Standards Board (PSB).

EDITOR'S VOICE.... OVER IP

Wireless Internet access has cut the last wires tethering us to our offices and home. In many parts of the globe, outdoor wireless networks are the only way people can quickly access the Internet and thus the world.

It is truly inspiring to see how wireless technology can open someone's world and widen the horizons to wonderful new possibilities. Though some would bemoan the encroaching of work into our personal lives, the ability to stay in touch with friends and family, to access information and services 24x7 and the flexibility to work away from the office would be welcomed by most.

This issue of the newsletter shares some insights on the possibilities of unwiring our world. I am confident that these articles will give you a better understanding of the new markets that are possible with outdoor wireless networking.

We look forward to sharing other interesting deployments and connecting with you at our upcoming events . Keep your suggestions and deployment stories coming at marketing@smartbridges.com .

Sincerely,
Kiran Prakash

CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORIES
Unwiring to a Better Life in Rural India

In remote areas of large countries, it is simply not economically feasible to lay the last mile of cable to provide Internet connections to a few isolated inhabitants. Combine that with the fact that in most parts of the world, rural areas are predominantly impoverished and you have billions of people who will never have access to the Internet or participate in the digital revolution. This is where Wi-Fi technology shows the greatest promises.

The power of Information Technology to make a significant impact on rural populations is undisputed. Wireless broadband makes access to services otherwise unavailable in rural areas possible. For example:

• Education:
Video conferencing allows the best teachers in the city to teach several classrooms at the same time bringing quality higher education to the village.

• E-Governance:
Easier access to accurate information and to services makes government more efficient and relevant and increases the effectiveness of policies.

• Healthcare:
Follow up secondary care by specialists and more efficient tracking of vaccinations can be achieved through video conference, VoIP and email in areas without even a phone line.

India is the perfect case in point. With a population of over one billion people, of whom 72% live in scattered villages in rural areas, there is a huge digital divide between the major cities which now have thriving software and IT based industries and rural areas which still struggle to obtain basic services.

For a recent demonstration on how smartBridges' products were used to connect villages in rural India and bridge the digital divide, click here .

POINT-TO-POINT

Interview with Mr. Mahabir Pun, Volunteer and Winner of Best Social Innovation Award

Nangi, Nepal - 2,260m in the air nestled among the world's highest mountains, the Himalayas . A nine hour hike from the nearest bus-accessible town. Mahabir Pun was the local teacher who brought Nangi onto the world map by bringing in wireless Internet to a village with no other form of communications. His efforts led to him being featured on BBC News Online. Now five villages including Nangi are linked together into one digital community using smartBridges airPoint-PRO access points.

With the network, the villagers are better able to manage their traditional yak farming and even venture into e-commerce, marketing the folk handicraft they make to provide additional sources of income.

Here we talked to Mahabir in Nangi via email, made possible by the communication link he has created and asked him how life has changed for him and his village. Click here to read more.
