CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORIES

Telco Combines E1 & Wireless for a Better Backhaul Solution

Wireless is easily the lowest cost and most easily implemented solution today for the increasing backhaul demands for a Telco's network. When a Telco in Pakistan needed to extend E1 lines to reach a customer, it chose a wireless backhaul to avoid laying cable for a single link. Worldcall, one of Pakistan's largest private telecom operators, decided on smartBridges Nexus backhaul to extend the E1 lines to the leading GSM cellular operator in Pakistan with over 17 million subscribers.

The wireless link, implemented by NetSoft Solutions, smartBridges Channel Partner, connects the customer's office to Worldcall premises in Lahore, Pakistan's second largest city. By choosing a wireless link in the unlicensed band, Worldcall achieved immediate deployment and hence immediate revenue realization while keeping Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and Operating Expenditure (OPEX) to a minimum.

"We chose smartBridges airHaul Nexus backhaul because its dual band capability gives great interference resistance by changing to a different band of frequency and its ultra high receive sensitivity ensures consistent high throughput," said Zeeshan Ahmad, Worldcall Technical Manager.

EDITOR'S VOICE... OVER IP

In our deployment story for this issue, we learn how to deliver TDM over a PSN such as IP and Ethernet. The largest private telecom in Pakistan found that a E1/wireless backhaul combination was the best way to reach a customer. This is an interesting issue since carriers are still maintaining expensive TDM infrastructure while cheaper IP networks are becoming the standard. We would like to hear how you (or your customer) are managing to marry these two without having to change end user equipment.

smartBridges Rolls Out Wi-Fi Antennas Operating in Multiple License Free Bands

Singapore, July 18, 2006

Multi-band antennas can operate in multiple frequencies in the 2.4 GHz and 5.x GHz saving cost for wireless service providers and providing better interference mitigation

smartBridges, a leading provider of standards-based outdoor fixed wireless networking equipment, has rolled out an entire series of antennas which can operate in several license free bands, saving service providers from having to buy and deploy several different antennas for their wireless networks. The unique multi-band antennas can operate in both the 2.4 GHz and 5.x GHz license free frequency bands.

By having just one antenna transmitting in multiple frequencies, service providers stand to save not just on equipment costs, but also on rental costs for the premium real estate space on the tower. With few such antennas offering multi-band capability available (and those being very expensive), the smartBridges antennas are expected to fill a high demand niche in the market.

smartBridges produces an industry-first multi-band antenna which seamlessly bonds the 2.4 GHz and 5.x GHz bands to achieve 27 non overlapping channels

smartBridges Releases New Firmware for airPoint Nexus PRO TOTAL (sB3212) and airClient Nexus PRO TOTAL (sB3412)

smartBridges is excited to release new firmware for airPoint Nexus PRO TOTAL (sB3212), version 1.02.02 and airClient Nexus PRO TOTAL (sB3412), version 1.02.02 (for units currently running on v1.00.00; for units currently running on v1.00.00_R6 the firmware version is 1.02.04). Based on customers’ feedback and requirements, the new firmware has a number of new features that aid in network management.

The airPoint Nexus PRO TOTAL firmware version 1.02.00 supports DFS which allows the device to dynamically select the best channel in the domain to avoid interference and thereby eliminating the need for the user to intervene when interference occurs.

In addition to DFS, the beta version of the Sputnik Agent has been included. The Sputnik Agent is responsible for communicating with the Sputnik Control Center™. The Sputnik Control Center software is an affordable, centralized subscriber management system which enables service providers to remotely configure access points, create custom captive portal pages, set network policies, and generate reports. For more information on this, visit Sputnik.

Other major enhancements include support for OFCOM channels and having the ETH A LED blink during the entire boot-up sequence to signify that power is on.

The airClient Nexus PRO Total sB3412 firmware version 1.02.02 (and version 1.02.04) supports Port Forwarding and DNS Propagation in NAT Mode. With Port Forwarding enabled, client devices with NAT gateway configured will allow you to even host websites in a private network. While with DHCP enabled on the wireless interface, DNS propagation will allow the client computers to receive the DNS address directly from the Internet service provider.

Other major new features include:

  1. Robust flash protection in place to prevent flash corruption
  2. Allows user to add static routes in NAT/Bridge mode
  3. Allows user to disable/enable RIP in Router mode
  4. Improves radio outage detection and recovery time

SUPPORT - smartTips

Monitoring smartBridges Nexus Radios using MRTG

You can now learn how to install and configure MRTG to monitor smartBridges Nexus products. The Multi-Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) is a freely available tool which is commonly used for monitoring the bandwidth utilization, traffic statistics and RSSI. MRTG creates visual representation of the traffic seen during the last 7 days, 5 weeks and 12 months. The graphs are embedded into web pages which can be viewed from any web browser, allowing for easy remote manageability.

The simple MRTG application notes helps you to install and configure MRTG for Nexus point-to-point links and does not require any prior knowledge of MRTG. We are improving this documentation with more visual graphics in an upcoming version. Please send your feedback to support@smartbridges.com.
