Wireless Virtual LANs improve performance, security, and formation of workgroups in wireless networks
A
Wireless Virtual LAN (VLAN) is a switched network that is logically
partitioned by function, rather than on a physical or geographical
basis. VLAN groups network devices and enables them to behave as if
they are in one single network. Network reconfiguration can be done
through software instead of physically relocating devices. Wireless
VLANs offer the following benefits:
Performance - Broadcast traffic is confined to each VLAN, reducing bandwidth utilization and improving network performance.
Improved LAN security - Packets in different VLANs cannot communicate with each other directly.
Formation of Virtual Workgroups
- With VLAN technology, clients can be allocated to different working
groups, and users from the same group do not have to be within the same
physical area, making network construction and maintenance much easier
and more flexible.
The image below depicts the formation of wireless VLANs using smartBridges devices.
